Don York

Horace B. Horton Professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics, Emeritus, in the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics, Enrico Fermi Institute, and the College, University of Chicago
email: don@oddjob.

Professor York's research is in the field of interstellar material and intergalactic matter, aka, galaxy formation and the origin of the elements of the periodic table; he also directed the construction of Apache Point Observatory, home of a 3.5 meter general purpose telescope and of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Following 20 years of bringing new technologies to astronomical projects, and watching careers change because of it, Professor York has an abiding belief that technology provides some answers to the current challenges in education in the public schools. In 1996 he co-founded the Chicago Public Schools | University of Chicago Internet Project (CUIP), which assists 35 schools in neighborhoods surrounding the University of Chicago to enhance teaching and learning through the use of Internet and other computer technologies.
